Why Can't I Stop Eating: Recognizing, Understanding, and Overcoming Food Addiction

This book could have been so much more
I read this book with high hopes that it would finally give me the tools to understand why I binge and what to do about it. However, it seemed to me that most of the book was devoted to telling the reader that she is not to blame for her food addiction. That is true, of course, but a couple sentences about it would have been sufficient. I wanted more of a scientific explanation of why I'm addicted to certain foods, but there really wasn't any.

Most of the book is spent building up to creating your own food plan, but when you get there, it's just a very strict meal plan with pretty much no suggestions on modifying it. The authors insist that you won't be hungry following this plan. I have eaten exactly the same breakfast they suggest, and I have rarely made it past 3 hours without feeling ravenously hungry; they insist that you must wait 4-5 hours between meals.

The authors do not seem to take variations in activity level into account. I made a rough calculation of the calories allowed, and it looks to me like there are about 1700 calories/day for women. This might be fine for someone who does only the 30 minutes of walking 3x/week as is recommended in the book. I, however, exercise fairly intensely for about an hour 6x/week. I need more calories. No recommendations are given for adapting the meal plan for this kind of situation.

The meal plan includes a nighttime snack, which consists of cereal, milk, and fruit, and is intended to prevent middle-of-the-night binging. That meal is one of my favorite binges - if anything, it's going to make things worse! No alternative meal arrangements are suggested. And besides, I have never once gotten up in the middle of the night to eat, but the authors seem to think that all food addicts do this.

On the positive side, I did appreciate that the book validated my belief that I am physically addicted to sugar and refined carbohydrates. It also opened my eyes to the possibility that I am addicted to wheat, refined or not.

Support for overcoming your food addiction
This book is filled with support and encouragement to help you overcome your problems with food. It helps you know you are not alone through the authors personal stories and stories of others. I highly recommend this book. It is great reading and has highly motivated me to live a healthier life, JUST FOR ME.

Changing Your Life
The majority of Americans are overweight according to national statistics. Television, radio, and newspapers report new weight reduction diets, books, pills and shakes. Weight loss is a multi-million dollar industry and most of us who have tried some of the diet methods may have lost weight, only to gain it back, which becomes a way of life. Diets, shakes, medications, portioned meals we discover are "quick fixes," but they do not provide permanent results. Society has stigmatized the word "addiction," and many of us with weight problems are reluctant to admit we are addicted to food. Ms. Danowski's book presents medical facts, undeniable data, and we are forced to look at our eating behaviors which many of us find as "ugly" as our overweight appearance. This book provides the rationale and the path to stop eating, to lose weight and to keep off that weight. This is not another fad; it is a sensible way to lose weight and not gain it back, by taking the steps to change our behavior. Debbie Danowski's story is real; this author is brave enough to tell the story of all who do not like what they see or how they feel, but few take the steps to change permanently. For anyone who has been disappointed with all of the marketed diet plans, anyone who wants to like himself/herself, this book can change your life.

I couldn't stop laughing :)
I never knew that there was a book called chicken soup for any soul until my mentor suggested I read Chicken soup for the Women's soul. I liked that one. All of them have short stories about real people and things that happened to them as they walk threw their lives. On my first day of College which was July of 2001 I went to the bookstore and I saw Chicken soup for the College soul and I thought I have to get this book, I read a little bit while I was in the store, and I could relate with some of the stories about classes and room mates. I brought it and when I was bored some days in my dorm I would read the book ,and I would laugh so much my room mate whould ask me are you ok? I highly recommend this book for any college student. There are stories that could make you emotional, laugh, or perhaps know what not to do. There are definitely stories that many people can relate to. In my case:
I love philosophy and there was this one story about a student who didn't really like the class too much I think. (It's been a while since I read this one) but the teacher said how many people know there grandparents most people raise their hands, than he said how many people know there great grandparents a couple people raise there hands, and how many people know anything about your great great grandparents one or two people raise their hands. He said something about leaving your mark so people can remember you down the line, so you won't be forgotten or perhaps no will remember you exist later on in the years. It made everyone in the room stay 5 minutes after class wondering about that. It made me wonder too. There are other stories that are like that. It's a great book.

A great collection of comforting and funny stories.
I received Chicken Soup for the College Soul, for Christmas during my senior year of highschool. During this time, like many seniors, I was completely stressed out over choosing and appling to colleges. The stories in this book helped me to realize that college can be a lot of fun and is not something to stress out about. The section titled Transition was the most helpful to me. Saying good-bye to the only family and friends that you have known during your life is hard. This section shows how other seniors handled saying good bye to life long friends and saying hello to students on their new campuses. High school seniors have a hard time showing emotions and admitting to others that they are afraid of what lays ahead. This book explains different aspects of college life and how to handle them. The best way to learn about college life is from people who have experienced it. Chicken Soup for the College Soul is made up entirely of stories people have written about their college experiences. If you know a high school student I highly recommend purchasing this book for them. Going to college is going to be scary, but having a book full of people who have been in my situation and survived will give me the courage to conquer college life.

Totally Awesome, Great High school Graduation Gift
I just finished reading Chicken Soup for the College Soul and found the book, like all the Chicken Soup books, to be totally awesome. This book would make a great gift for graduating high school seniors and/or any college student. The stories are inspiring and help students realize there is hope of surviving through college.

The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark
I have read all of the books in this series that have been written and absolutely love them all. They a delightful stories about love, friendship, and family. I believe that any reader would agree that this series was tastefully written and fun to read. Lawana Blackwell ( the author) is so detailed, and thorough that as the character in the book is walking down the street and says hello to a neighbor you know all of the neighbors background and history. I enjoyed this series and I know that you will also. After you have read all of the books in this series I think you will agree that you can't wait till the next one is published.

Another GREAT story about the people who live in Gresham!
I absolutely love the characters and stories that Lawana Blackwell writes in her books about the people in Gresham. This book is so sweet about love and forgiveness. I was so sad to finish it and look forward to more about the people in Gresham.

I love this book! It made me laugh and cry...
If you start reading this book, I guaratee you won't want to put it down!!! It has a great plot with descriptive characters whom you want to meet in person, and great setting and also the forgiveness of God in the bad things they do. I identify with alot of the character's feelings and wishes. Mrs. Blackwell did a wonderful job of weaving all the characters' lives together in one book. This is one of Mrs. Lawana's best!!! Please keep writing because I enjoy your books soooo much. I hope to read "The Maiden of Mayfair" soon since it promises a wonderful read also! Keep it up Mrs. Lawana!!

The Big Cats and Their Fossil Relatives

Good reference work
The Big Cats by Alan Turner is a very thorough discussion of the cat family, past and present. It also sports illustrator Mauricio Anton's splendid sketches and paintings of various members of the family. Those of extinct cats bring them to life in a way that the usual drawings of the skull and skeletal remains cannot. There is a thorough discussion of taxonomy in general and of classification of cats in particular. Unfortunately while the drawings are wonderful and the information dense, the book is not light reading. It might be useful to the professional paleontologist or zooarchaeologist looking for a good overview of cat remains or possibly appeal to the dedicated cat lover, but I can't imagine settling in by the fire on a quiet evening with the book. Its most appropriate place might be in a school library for reference use by students doing classroom projects on cats, paleontology, biology, ecology, etc.

A Most Excellent Read
I have long been interested about large cat (especially jaguars), and have often wondered about their evolution and early relatives. However, I had searched through every library in my county with no success. When I found this book, it was like a godsend. With superb illustrations and an excess of information, this has potential to be the definitive resource on prehistoric cats. Every big cat enthusiast should buy this book. This has become one of my second bibles.

At last! First class paleo-mammal illustrations!

In
the current dino-mania, fossil mammals are overshadowed. Too bad;
there are many curious and wonderful creatures in the mammalian
lineage. Yet, few well-illustrated popular books on the subject
exist. Bjorn Kurten's _Before the Indians_ had blurry charcoal
drawings. The late George Gaylord Simpson was an authority on
prehistoric South American mammals, but little more than a doodler
with a brush. And Colin Tudge's wonderful _The Time Before History_
had no pictures at all.

So this book is most welcome. Mauricio
Anton is a gifted artist. Cats and catlike creatures such as
nimravids, homotheriums, saber-tooths, dirk-tooths, all seem to live
again in these color and b/w pictures. The only beastie which is
unconvincingly rendered is the poorly-known _Thylacoleo_, the
marsupial lion.

Through the reproductions and discussions of these
and other animals, one gets a lesson in how different animals adopt
similar body plans, based on their ecological niche. Large top
predators are robust, while middle niche hunters are more
gracile. Thus, we are told, _Thylacoleo_, the largest nimravids, and
the largest saber-tooths resemble lions, while smaller predators
resemble cheetahs and leopards. All in all, a must for big cat- and
paleontology- lovers, the latter who may be getting tired of
dinosaurs!

Fabulous True Crime Book
The tale of Patty Columbo and Frank DeLuca and the terrible murder of the Columbo family was totally gripping and engrossing - one of the best true crime books I have ever read, and I've read a lot of them. The author asked a basic question "What makes this 19-year-old girl go out and kill her parents and younger brother? " and then unravels the sordid tale. At the end of the book, I was definitely questioning everything about the case - especially Patty's involvement. The book tells the story from Patty's side and really delves into her subconscious and her memories. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was it did drag on for a while -- all the conversations and meetings with the "hit men" was a little overdone -- and there were some sections that were pretty sexually explicit. All I can say is, Frank DeLuca is a complete pervert and a total wacko and what a shame that Patty ever got involved with him -- it cost the lives of three people. A great true crime book, not up there with the likes of "Helter Skelter" or "Stranger Beside Me" . . . but a good read nonethless!

A tragic tale of a life gone wrong
I read a lot of true crime books, and I bought this book thinking I would read just another true story of a murderess and her wrath. I started reading the book convinced of Patricia Columbo's guilt, but by the time I finished it, Clark Howard left me completely baffled with nagging questions. Did she do it? The book held my attention from start to finish -- the sexual abuse she suffered as a young girl, her disastrous relationship with the much older Frank DeLuca, the tragic murders of her family, and her life in prison up to the time the book was written. This is the first time I have actually felt, as another reader noted, a twinge of sorrow for someone convicted of a crime of this nature. The seriousness of the crimes were not lost on me, but I can't help but thinking where would she be if she had not met Frank DeLuca.

Well researched & well written... Makes you wonder!
I truly enjoyed this book. I was pretty much convinced of Patricia Columbo's guilt until the very end -- now I'm not sure what to believe. But this much I know... it was one of the better true crime books I've read, and I've read hundreds!

Darkness Demands

Spooky, atmospheric horror
Darkness Demands is one of the few horror novels that I've read that actually scared me and made me not want to turn off the lights at night once I was done reading. Clark does a great job of developing the setting and the characters. We really do get to care and feel for John and his family, and old man Stan Price. The evils in this novel are not seen or described, only felt. They are open to the reader's imagination.

Just a warning before reading: Don't expect another Blood Crazy. With Blood Crazy, Clark served up an epic, over-the-top, roller-coaster ride of horror violence that was unlike anything I'd ever read before. Darkness Demands is very different. It uses subtleness and old folklore to create an old-fashioned ghost story. No matter your tastes in horror, I highly recommend this book. I will remember Darkness Demands for many years to come.

This book will stay with you a while...
"Darkness Demands" by British thriller novelist, Simon Clark definitely has "staying power". It's this "staying power" that is one of the criterion that I use to judge an outstanding horror novel. Long after you have read it, "Darkness Demands" will remain in your memory. It's that good!

Life begins to look good for novelist John Newton as he finally starts to make it good as a novelist. Good, that is, until he (along with other members of his town) begin to receive cryptic, almost comical, messages left on their doorsteps asking that candy bars and pints of beer be left in the creepy old cemetary just outside of town. No one seems to know who or why these messages are being left until they begin to talk to some of the town's older residents who let them is on the town's dirty little secret. A secret so perverse that John Newton can't believe it!

Clark does his usual great job creating memorable characters that the reader actually cares about. This book is just as impressive in that area as his earlier works, especially "Nailed By the Heart".

This is a book that has a great "hook" - "creepy local legend that the townsfolk try to survive from generation to generation". Newton and his family are caught in the middle of the legend and he does what he can to try and put an end to it. When the life of his daughter becomes part of the "game" then the book really takes off.

"Darkness Demands" is a great novel that will certainly keep you turning the pages. The suspense builds throughout the book and Clark really turns up the heat on the Newton family as the book progresses. The ending is unexpected, but totally believeable.

If you enjoy a good yarn and are a fan of novelists such as, Owl Goingback, Stephen King or Richard Laymon, then I think you'll enjoy this book. Clark is a very promising talent that should be around for a long, long, time. Maybe long enough to create his own legends!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A superb horror novel
Darkness Demands is the kind of horror novel that comes along once in a rare while because its a rather new concept and a very horrifying story. I love horror but most books don't really scare me. This one did. The whole idea of living next to a gigantic cemetery is creepy but mysterious notes popping up on your doorstep telling you to bring candy or beer to the cemetery is odd yet frightening in some weird way. This was good storytelling at its finest. The characters are real and you actually feel involved while reading this. You care about them.

Darkness Demands is not a simple book in the end. It doesn't end the way you want it to and there is no easy answers or solutions but its one heck of a ride.

This Book Is A definite Winner!
The GoLive 6 Magic book from New Riders looks like a miniature coffee table art book. It contains 244 pages and a CD. I was struck by the beautiful black & white photos of nature at the beginning of each chapter and the multitude of screen shots. The introduction states that Adobe® GoLive 6 is an extremely powerful and easy to use visual web authoring tool popular with high level designers and graphic artists while also empowering web novices and advanced users alike. The author assumes that the reader of this book probably already knows the basics of GoLive but wants to go on to the next level. You want to know about multimedia, creating actions and extensions, building dynamic web sites and coding for hand held devices and more. There are also many time saving tips, tricks, and real-world solutions in the book. More and more people are using hand held devices to access the web and so you have to take into consideration that particular i-Mode. You can test your site on different i-Mode devices (via emulation software) to render the graphical and text content.

GoLive 6 Magic was especially timely for me because our User Group web site is being remodeled. Two of the new features we want to incorporate are included in the book: collapsible DHTML menus using ID actions and creating an action to display random images. Collapsible menus afford you to display many items in a limited space. When you roll over a main menu item, it displays a sub-menu of more items with links.

The CD contains all the necessary files to perform the various customizable exercises as well as demo versions of related software. The CD opens by double-clicking. I tried the exercise to create collapsible DHTML menus with sub-menus using ID actions. Wow! It was so easy. The book walks you step by step through each project and also displays an accompanying screen shot. I set up the CSS files (Cascading Style Sheets) once and customized my font display. This is better than doing each link one at a time. I used a font family such as: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva and SunSans Regular. Although you can assign any font on your computer to a CSS style, your page's viewers can only see the fonts installed on their computers. You tailor your web page so that all the fonts look good on the page. If the viewer does not have Arial on his computer, it will default to Helvetica if installed and so on. A web designer stays with the fonts that most everyone has installed on both platforms. Well, the project turned out just as it was supposed to and it was easy besides. Besides tips there also were explanations for why you do a certain thing. I'm sold, this book is a definite winner!

Become a golive power user
Great book for Golive users who want to go to the next level.

Golive is a very powerful web authoring program and Golive 6 Magic is very good in showing some of the features that I might have never duscovered on my own.

Text macros, Quicktime and Flash sniffer techniques, creating Quicktime sprites and skins, cool DHTML projects (I like the online calender), authoring your own javascript actions, getting into the SDK, setting up your own Dynamic database content management system with PHP and MySQL are some of the 14 projects included.

There is a companion CD that has all the data for Golive 6 to use when you follow along with the book.

Some of the projects seemed a bit intimidating to an intermediate user like myself, but the book is layed out so clearly that it was fun to delve into the projects.

I have set up my own MySQL,PHP database for the first time thanks to Golive 6 magic ( a sample database is included).

This is a needed addition to the Golive library.

I Really Enjoyed This Book.
If you want to take GoLive a few steps further then this is the book for you. Though this book is not for the novice GoLive user, as somone who considers himself in the intermediate/advanced user category I found it very useful indeed. My biggest problem was installing the Dynamic Content Servers from the GoLive CD so that I could work through the "Building a Dynamic Content Management System using PHP and MySQL" Project!

Author Paul Vachier brings in "GoLive Superstars" such as Rob Keniger as contributors to great advantage.

I have really enjoyed working through the tutorials which are very well edited. Often I get frustrated with books like these because I find that the text does not always match up with the practical steps to be taken. However in GoLive 6 Magic they matched very well indeed. I actually had fun doing it. And now after working through "Creating Quicktime Sniffers" to "Displaying Random Images and URLs" to "Building Dynamic Content" and the other 11 tutorials I think that I am a much more skilled user. What more can I ask?

The Anastasia Syndrome

Most of the stories are very un-MHC
THE ANASTASIA SYNDROME - One Star - This story is very un-Mary Higgins Clark. It might be a good story if you believe in supernatural powers. I don't, therefore it left me disappointed. It is well-written, she created a very dark and eerie atmosphere but the whole theory of the Anastasia Syndrome seems pretty silly to me. TERROR STALKS THE CLASS REUNION - Five Stars - This is a stupid title but a great story. It makes you feel as helpless as the victim. I had a nightmare about this story the night after I finished it - and I read a lot of suspense stories but almost never dream about them! LUCKY DAY - Three Stars - A nice story about trust but not outstanding. I liked the ending, it is very good - and surprising. DOUBLE VISION - Four Stars - A very creepy story about acting and revenge. It includes another supernatural appearance but this one is easier to tolerate than "The Anastasia Syndrome". THE LOST ANGEL - Three Stars - A Christmas story with a very predictable ending. Not much suspense but okay to read.

A Well Written Book of Short Stories!
I've read other books of Mary Higgins Clark before, but I've enjoyed this book of Anastasia and other short stories the most.

In the main story, Anastasia, an historical writer Judith Chase, is engaged to the future prime minister, Stephen Hallet. She is working on a novel though, and is caught up in a lot of other issues along with it. The evil mind of Margaret Carew, dominates Judith, and it is a true mystery as to what is happening within her mind. You really have to read into it to know what I am referring to here, but it becomes very frightening in many places as Judith experiences strange events. The psychiatrist, Dr. Patel, puts her under hypnosis, giving her a drug that makes her regress further into her confusing past.

The other stories in the book, were even scarier yet, than Anastasia. If you feel like a good thrill, read on!

Great Reading!
The sories in this book are great reading. This is the 2nd book by Mary Higgins Clark that I have read and I loved it. Having 5 short stories in one book was great for my short attention span. If you do not have a lot of time to sit down and read a whole book at one time, this would deffinatly be a good to read. You could read one story at a time.

My favortie story was the first one, The Anastasia Syndrome. A womans mind is taken over by an evil womans mind from the past. You will never guess how it ends.

The other four stories were very enjoyable reads as well. Terror Stalks the Class Reunion will keep you guessing through the whole story.

Lucky Day starts out as a lucky day for one man and turns out to be unlucky for him and two other people.

Double Vision is a bit of a stretch for the title. You have to read it to find out why.

The Lost Angel is my least favorite but an enjoyable read any way.

Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook 2nd Ed.
This book is a good start for someone interested in sports nutrition and overall good eating habits. It has chapters on eating breakfast to eating disorders. A helpful resource for good, fast, recipes with out a lot of fuss. A third edition might be helpful to further the information in the this edition. Overall, a great book, Nancy Clark is a real person with similar goals and interests as her readers, a great person to relate to!

Nutrition Made Easy
As a personal fitness trainer, I am always looking for common sense ways to explain proper nutrition to my clients. At first I bought this book for myself to help improve my running and get the most out of my workouts. What I found was a book that will not only help an athlete improve performance but has common sense nutritional information for almost anyone. Nancy is a Registered Dietitian who cuts through the nutrition myths and lays out a coming sense eating plan that works for almost anyone. If you are looking for a new fad diet you won't find it here although she has added a couple of chapters on sensible weight management in the latest edition. Sports specific chapters include how to carbo load before an event and what it really takes to add muscle mass. The book has over 200 quick and easy recipes that help round out your nutrition plan. After you read it you will wonder why you didn't take this common sense approach to nutrition years ago. Even if you buy it and don't read it from cover to cover, you can still pick up invaluable tips just browsing through and reading her informative tables and charts. A great way to jumpstart your nutrition plan by eating sensibly, keeping your body fueled and keeping your energy up.

Nancy Clark is a Master in NUTRITION !!!!!!
I have been on all kinds of diets trying to figure out what would be the best Meal plan for me to follow for the rest of my life. I found the answers in this book. I have also visited a nutritionist to see if I was on track. I told my Nutritionist that I purchased Nancy Clark's Book and my nutritionist had told me "This is an Excellent Book... you're on the right track". What an investment I made. This book has sections on all kinds of Nutrition requirements for the Young, middle aged, elderly, Athletes and Bodybuilders. This book is concise, simple to read and provides pertinent information with a lot of illustrations. What a GREAT READ !

Dr. Warren's book helped me in choosing a great wife.
Finding the Love of your Life is filling with many good ideas. My wife and I read this book while we were still dating, and it helped us deal with issues that might have become conflicts in our marriage. Dr. Warren's years of experience gives him insight that would take the average person years of hard lessons to obtain.

This book helped us to deal with issues such as communication, arguments, money, and sex before they became a problem. Is my marriage perfect? No , but we are very happy and because we dealt with many issues before marriage the transition from single to married has not been hard.

Furthermore, Dr. Warren point out the relationships need to be thought out, and the love is more than just a feeling. This book will help others to evaluate their relationships and determine whether they should continue with them or not.

I highly recommend this book.

the best pre-marriage book I have read
My wife and I used this book extensively while we were dating. She had found it years before and introduced me to it. The questions and exercises helped us to get beyond our puppy love and to evaluate the potential of our lives together. This book is essential for all who are dating, and I would say it could be useful for a lot of married people, too. We give it to our single friends.

Excellent for singles in a dating relationship and before
I read this book several times and reviewed it while in three different dating relationships, and sometimes wondered if the right person was out there for me. But, the book was a great help to me, in understanding why my relationships were not working out and in some that I had to end, and when the right one came along I knew it!! So many people say that opposites attract and that may be true at first, but the greatest thing I learned from this book was that every area that you are different from your partner will be a potential conflict, so finding a mate that has the most similarities is key to a happy marriage. I just celebrated my 4th anniversary, and I can say that we did not have the struggles many couples have in getting adjusted as newlyweds because of how much we have in common. Everything needs to be discussed before marriage to determine compatability and much prayer needs to be put into it as well, so you keep a level head, and don't base your relationship on feelings, but make sure you are at peace with God in choosing your mate! (Proverbs 16:9) I was 28 when I got married, and let me say it was worth the long wait, the many relationships, and the many times of reading this book and learning patience and learning to be content single first.
